The Botanical world feeds us, provides oxygen for us, and gives us the medicines to heal our bodies, the beauty to heal our minds and the essences to heal our souls. With over 250,000 known species, the plant world is the second largest population on the Plant. Species range from the tiny green mosses to giant trees.
Aromatherapy, also known as Essential Oil Therapy, is the art and science of extracting, through steam distillation or other means, the aromatic essences from blossoms, barks, roots, leaves, and seeds to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit. It seeks to unify and strengthen physiological, psychological and spiritual processes to enhance an individual’s natural healing process.
Essential oil’s are the immune system of the plant, because of the stress they endure by the steam distillation or other forms of extraction, they released their own protective saps/extracts, which become what we call an essential oil, because they are essential for the survival of that plant.
How does aromatherapy work?
Aromatherapy works with the part of the brain called the limbic system. The limbic system is commonly referred to as the “emotional brain” since it influences emotions, the nervous system and hormones. When you inhale essential oil molecules, messages are transmitted to the limbic system, which affect heart rate, stress level, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion, and the immune system. This relationship is why smells often trigger emotions and it helps to explain why inhalation of essential oils can have some very profound physiological and psychological effects, it bypasses all other systems and goes straight to the limbic brain. Aromatherapy is used in a wide range of settings — from health spas to hospitals — to treat a variety of conditions. In general, it seems to relieve pain, improve mood, and promote a sense of relaxation. In fact, several essential oils — including lavender, rose, orange, bergamot, lemon, sandalwood, and others — have been shown to relieve anxiety, stress, and depression.
What you can expect in an aromatherapy session?
You can expect to be deeply listened to as you explain the physical, mental and spiritual symptoms you are experiencing. During this process, insights and understandings arise that begin to help you access your intentions and take responsibility for the healing that you have control of, no matter what the outcome of the illness or troubles are. From this understanding we will make your remedy. I will teach you how to use them to support your well-being and intentions for healing.
I use small concentrations of essential oil’s as to not interfere with any of your medical treatments. Aromatherapy is not a substitute for medical or psychological services; it is however, a wonderful complementary addition to your care.
